Houston to be part of worldwide energy efficiency effort - Business First of Louisville:

Fifteen of the world's largest including Houston, will be part of the program coordinatedc by major banks and energyservice companies. The energg efficiency building retrofit program was announced May 16 at the C40 Larg e Cities Climate Summit in New where mayors from around the world are discussing globaplclimate change. Besides Houstoh -- where many firms have already begun to adopg the so-called "green building" concepf -- other cities involved includes New York, Chicago, Toronto, Mexicoi City, London, Berlin, Tokyo and Rome. The plannecd projects include replacing heating, cooling and lightinbg systemswith energy-efficient networks; making roofs whitew or reflective to deflect more of the sun'ws heat; sealing windows and installing new models that let more light in and keep the elementes out; and setting up sensors to control more efficient use of light and air conditioning.
CitiBank, , , and ABN Amro have each committes $1 billion to finance the upgrades to provide the technologu to the cities involved atno cost. The retrofi program is expected to produce a 20 percenyt to 50 percent reduction inenergy use, the foundation said. The exact nature of the financintg will be determined in thecominhg months. , , and will conductt energy audits ofthe buildings, complete the retrofit and guarantee the energy savings -- even paying the differencs if savings are not realized. Other cities takinhg part include Mumbai, India; Karachi, Pakistan; Seoul, South Bangkok, Thailand; Melbourne, Australia; Sao Paulo, and Johannesburg, South Africa.
