Duke hires Cisco Systems for

The three-year agreement is the latest developmeny inDuke Energy’s effort to convert its analog electricity infrastructure into a digital system that reducezs energy use and boosts reliability. The architecture will be basedon Internet-protocolp standards that will adapt to new communications “Our goal is to rapidly transforj the way electricity is delivered to, and used by, the 11 million people we serve in five states,” says Todd Arnold, senior vice presidengt for smart grid and customer systems at Duke Energy. In Cisco will work with Duke Energy to develop and instalkhome energy-management devices to help customers control and reducde their electricity consumption.
Financialp terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed. Charlotte-based Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) includeas Duke Energy Carolinas and the former Cincinnati Gas Electric Co. in Ohio, Unio n Light, Heat and Power in Kentucky and PSI Energuyin Indiana. Cisco Systems CSCO) is a California-based designedr and manufacturer ofnetworkingh technology.
